從專業材料的角度來看，鐵氟龍並不是一般人印象中那種「軟軟、容易老化的塑膠」，它正式的學名叫做聚四氟乙烯（Polytetrafluoroethylene），英文縮寫 PTFE，屬於「工程塑膠」的一員。工程塑膠的特色就是：耐熱、耐化學、耐磨、穩定度高，專門用在對材料要求很嚴苛的環境，而鐵氟龍正是其中的代表。
